In the bustling landscape of film, television, and literature, few names shine as brightly as Diane Kimbrough. A Detroit native with an extraordinary talent for storytelling, Diane’s journey from behind-the-scenes virtuoso to published author exemplifies her relentless pursuit of purpose, passion, and creativity. With an illustrious career spanning iconic productions and groundbreaking roles, she embodies the spirit of transformation—both in her personal journey and the stories she crafts.

Diane’s career began as a Locations Manager. With an innate eye for selecting landscapes that narrate stories of their own, she curated the visual backdrops for productions such as Rickey Smiley For Real, Lodge 49, and the cult classic SuperFly. Yet, it was her work on Preachers of Atlanta that remains her personal favorite—a project that harmonized her love for storytelling with deeply rooted themes of faith and resilience.

Her love for exploration and storytelling naturally led Diane into the dynamic world of production. As a producer, she played a pivotal role in bringing diverse stories to life, spanning genres and platforms. From the family-centered reality of T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle to the entrepreneurial rigor of Shark Tank and the unfiltered drama of Joseline’s Cabaret, Diane’s portfolio is a testament to her versatility and commitment to authentic narratives. Projects like Baddies and College Hill further underscore her ability to capture the pulse of contemporary culture.

Now, as a Development Executive at Zeus Network, Diane continues to break barriers, producing content that challenges conventions and resonates deeply with audiences. Her keen sense of narrative structure and character development ensures that each project she touches leaves a lasting impact.

Drawing inspiration from her own journey—from Detroit to Atlanta, and eventually Los Angeles—the novel is a reflection of her courage, growth, and unyielding quest for purpose. It’s a deeply personal story that resonates with anyone navigating the complexities of change and self-discovery.

In Finding Her Way, Diane channels her experiences into prose, offering readers an intimate glimpse into her soul. It’s more than a novel; it’s a roadmap for anyone striving to redefine their path.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Diane is a devoted mother and a self-proclaimed foodie—a detail that adds an endearing layer to her multifaceted persona. Her love for food mirrors her approach to storytelling: rich, diverse, and always seasoned with authenticity.

Whether on set, in the boardroom, or at her writing desk, Diane Kimbrough remains a beacon of inspiration. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, the beauty of storytelling, and the importance of staying true to oneself. As she continues to shape narratives that captivate, educate, and empower, one thing is clear: Diane is not just finding her way—she’s paving the path for others to follow.

Hailing from Detroit, how did you make your way into television/film?

My first introduction to TV and Film was when I lived in Atlanta Georgia. I worked as a Locations manager and I was able to make a lot of connections, but also able to watch certain positions on set to determine what I wanted to do with my career. Working in locations was great for me because it taught me how to provide a space that was conducive for everyone to do their job.

Where do you think your love for storytelling comes from?

My love for storytelling came from all of my past experiences. I grew up in the inner city of Detroit, where storytelling was a tool we used to share our experiences and learn from each other. That’s the beauty of my industry; we get to tell the stories that we lived, survived ,and thrived from.

What does it mean to be a black woman in entertainment?

Being a black woman in entertainment comes with its own challenges. We have so many odds against us, but one thing about black women is we are resilient and we find a way to make everything better around us.

Tell me what’s your definition of beauty?

There’s a combination of qualities that can make you beautiful! I believe beauty is not just about aesthetics, but it is truly about how you treat yourself and others by your generosity and kindness.

Working on such prolific shows, which proves to be your favorite and why?

Shark Tank is one of my favorite shows. I met some phenomenal men and women who had some of the best inventions and ideas but needed the capital in order to keep their business alive. I have a great appreciation for these entrepreneurs that literally spent their last to take a chance on themselves!

You wrote a novel, can you tell us about it and what inspired you?

In 2020 I decided to write a script; I wanted to tell a story that I would one day want to watch on TV/Film. Around the pandemic I believe we were all trying to find our way to our next aspiration. My book was literally birthed out of trying to find my way. “Finding her way” is about a woman who left everything behind to find a better life!

Who is Diane behind the lens?

What a great question! I’m a woman who loves to travel and enjoy life to the fullest. Traveling and fine dining has always been on the top of my list of living! I believe my greatest accomplishment was raising my son. I really strive to be the best mom I could possibly be.

Can you share what’s the next story you wish to share, be it film, television, or maybe another novel?

I am a hopelessly romantic person. I hope to one day have a hit series or a film, showing how black women are supported and loved unconditionally by her man.

Being a black woman and executive nonetheless, what example would you like other women to take from you?

I would like other women to know that your journey is your own, do not compare your life to others. It took me over 10 years to get to the level that I am today. Every job I took in production made me into the woman that I am today! I am currently the Head of Development at the Zeus Network. It is literally a dream come true

What does hype hair mean to you? What’s your favorite Hype Hair memory?

I can recall the days waiting on my stylist and picking up a Hype Hair magazine to find my next hairstyle . I would’ve never believed in a million years that I would be a part of something that’s been in our culture since the 90s this opportunity means the world to me because I’m all about Black culture! My favorite hype hair memory is when Aaliyah graced the cover back in the 90s, that was huge for us Detroit girls. I know for sure I started wearing my hair over my eye because of her!

But this celebration isn’t just about rocking a fro for one day; it’s about recognizing the powerful history behind this hairstyle and reflecting on the broader beauty standards it challenges. The afro, that majestic hairstyle with its halo-like volume, has seen a fascinating evolution. Once a symbol of resistance against Eurocentric beauty ideals, it now stands as a powerful emblem of self-love and cultural pride. In the 1960s and 70s, the afro was a bold statement during the “Black is Beautiful” movement, with influential figures like Angela Davis and the Jackson 5 flaunting their fros as symbols of liberation. Fast forward to the 90s, and the natural hair movement revived the afro, with celebrities like Lauryn Hill and Prince bringing it back into the limelight with new flair. But let’s dig a little deeper. Even as we celebrate the afro’s resurgence and its role in redefining black beauty, it’s worth asking: Why does the afro—or any natural hairstyle—still seem like a rebellious statement rather than just another part of everyday beauty? Despite the strides we’ve made, natural hair often faces prejudice, being deemed unconventional or unprofessional in various settings.National Afro Day invites us to go beyond mere admiration and question why the afro still carries a sense of resistance in our increasingly diverse world. It’s a chance to reflect on how we can push for a future where every hairstyle is celebrated without hesitation—a future where beauty norms truly embrace all textures and styles. So, how can we make the most of National Afro Day? Steaming vs. Deep Conditioning: The Hair Care Showdown You Didn’t Know You Needed https://hypehair.com/steaming-vs-deep-conditioning-the-hair-care-showdown-you-didnt-know-you-needed/ https://hypehair.com/steaming-vs-deep-conditioning-the-hair-care-showdown-you-didnt-know-you-needed/#respond Sun, 01 Sep 2024 12:30:00 +0000 https://hypehair.com/?p=6312 Written By Melissa Mixon

Hey there, hair enthusiasts! Ready to dive into the ultimate hair care face-off? We’re talking about the battle of the century: steaming vs. deep conditioning.

The Steamy Queen: Why You’ll Want to Get Cozy with Her

First up, let’s talk steaming. Picture this: you’re lounging like royalty with a steam cap on, your hair getting drenched in all that luscious moisture. Steaming is like the VIP spa treatment for your locks. It opens up your hair cuticles, letting in all those nourishing goodies from your favorite conditioners and oils. Plus, it’s a total game-changer if your hair’s feeling parched and in desperate need of a hydration boost. So, if your strands are craving some serious TLC, steaming is your new BFF.

Deep Conditioning Diva: The Classic Overachiever

Now, onto our deep conditioning diva. This classic beauty is all about that intense moisture and repair. Slather on your deep conditioner, let it sit like a queen on her throne, and voila – you’re giving your hair the kind of love it dreams of. Deep conditioners are packed with proteins and vitamins, making them perfect for fixing up damage and boosting shine. It’s like a rich, creamy smoothie for your hair, and who doesn’t love a good smoothie?

The Verdict: Steamy or Deep Conditioned?

So, which one’s the winner? It’s all about what your hair needs and what kind of vibe you’re going for. If you’re feeling like your hair needs a moisture infusion and you’ve got some time to chill, steaming is your jam. But if you’re all about that intense, restorative treatment and you’ve got a little extra time, deep conditioning is your go-to.

Why not mix things up and use both? After all, your hair deserves to have it all. Whether you’re steaming up a storm or deep conditioning like a pro, your locks will thank you for the extra love. So go ahead, get fabulous, and let your hair shine!

Aaliyah A. Aaliyah A. Thompson, a visionary beauty entrepreneur, is not only shaping the beauty industry but also making history as an advocate for the Autism community. Diagnosed with autism at the tender age of five, Aaliyah’s journey has been defined by perseverance, determination, and an innate calling to positively impact her community.

8D156917 DC5C 4CD8 A111 B38FE5E58D1F

With her strong passion for beauty, Aaliyah founded Aaliyah’s Beauty Bar and Aaliyah’s Nail School, becoming the first autistic person in the United States to own both a beauty bar and a nail school. This groundbreaking achievement reflects her unwavering commitment to defying expectations and opening doors for people with disabilities. “I am determined to change that,” says Aaliyah, referring to the barriers people with disabilities often face in vocational training environments like beauty schools. Aaliyah’s success has not gone unnoticed. She has been featured in Black Enterprise magazine and serves as an ambassador for McDonald’s Black and Positively Golden Change Leaders Program, further amplifying her voice as a leader for change.

Her educational journey was equally remarkable. Graduating with honors from Dutchtown High School in Jonesboro, Georgia, Aaliyah has long combined her intellect with her passion for music and beauty. Playing music by ear, a skill she refers to as her “superpower,” she navigated both academics and the creative arts with ease. This same drive and passion naturally evolved into entrepreneurial ventures, leading her to launch Aaliyah’s Beauty Bar.

The Beauty Bar, based in Stockbridge, Georgia, offers a wide range of services from makeup artistry to hair care, and Aaliyah’s Nail School, which launched in April 2023, is an inclusive institution specifically designed to accommodate students with disabilities. The school allows these students to learn and demonstrate mastery in nail artistry at their own pace, adapting to their abilities in a way that is often overlooked in traditional beauty schools.

Aaliyah’s advocacy extends beyond her business endeavors. She is also the driving force behind her nonprofit, Thompson Aaliyah Alicia, Inc., an organization focused on providing resources and building safe spaces for individuals with autism. Her dedication to this cause is clear: Aaliyah is committed to ensuring that those with autism are given the opportunities and support needed to thrive, both in the beauty industry and beyond.

Later this fall, Aaliyah’s story is expected to reach even wider audiences, with her work featured in an upcoming film by Joey Travolta, brother of the famed John Travolta. The film will focus on friendships among individuals on the autism spectrum, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and acceptance.

Aaliyah A. Thompson is a testament to the power of resilience and vision. Her work reminds us that one person can indeed change the world, especially when that change is rooted in the pursuit of equality and empowerment. Through her beauty bar, nail school, and nonprofit, Aaliyah is shattering glass ceilings and paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone—especially those who face similar challenges.

The Secret Behind “Black Don’t Crack”:  Unveiling the Ageless Beauty of Black Women https://hypehair.com/the-secret-behind-black-dont-crack-unveiling-the-ageless-beauty-of-black-women/ https://hypehair.com/the-secret-behind-black-dont-crack-unveiling-the-ageless-beauty-of-black-women/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 00:18:33 +0000 https://hypehair.com/?p=6098 By Charron Monaye

In popular culture, the phrase “Black don’t crack” has long been used to celebrate the seemingly ageless beauty of Black women. From celebrities like Angela Bassett and Viola Davis to everyday women, the phenomenon of Black women appearing to defy the aging process is widely recognized. But what lies behind this timeless beauty? Experts suggest that the secret is a combination of genetics, skincare, lifestyle choices, and cultural practices.

Genetics and Melanin: Nature’s Gift

The most significant factor contributing to the youthful appearance of Black women is genetics, particularly the role of melanin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of skin, hair, and eyes, and it offers several protective benefits.

  1. UV Protection: Melanin provides a natural defense against ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. It absorbs and dissipates harmful UV radiation, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. This protection helps prevent premature aging caused by sun exposure, such as wrinkles and age spots.
  2. Collagen Preservation: Melanin helps maintain the skin’s collagen, the protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. By protecting collagen from UV damage, melanin helps keep the skin supple and resilient.

Skincare Practices: A Tradition of Self-Care

Black women have long embraced skincare routines that emphasize hydration, nourishment, and protection. Traditional and modern skincare practices play a crucial role in maintaining youthful skin.

  1. Moisturization: Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Black women often use rich, emollient moisturizers to keep their skin hydrated and prevent dryness. Natural oils like shea butter, coconut oil, and argan oil are staples in many skincare routines.
  2. Gentle Cleansing: Avoiding harsh cleansers that can strip the skin of its natural oils is essential. Gentle cleansing helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and prevents irritation.
  3. Sun Protection: Despite the natural UV protection from melanin, many Black women use sunscreen to provide an additional layer of defense against sun damage. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher are recommended.

Lifestyle Choices: Healthy Living for Ageless Beauty

A healthy lifestyle contributes significantly to the overall appearance and well-being of Black women. Key factors include:

  1. Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients that support skin health. Antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals found in foods help combat oxidative stress and promote cell regeneration.
  2. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin hydrated from the inside out. Proper hydration supports the skin’s elasticity and radiance.
  3. Exercise: Regular physical activity promotes good circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Exercise also helps reduce stress, a factor that can negatively impact skin health.

Cultural Practices: Wisdom Passed Down Through Generations

Cultural traditions and wisdom passed down through generations play a significant role in the skincare and self-care routines of Black women.

  1. Natural Remedies: Many Black women use natural remedies and homemade treatments that have been used for centuries. Ingredients like aloe vera, honey, and turmeric are popular for their healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. Hair Care: Protective hairstyles, such as braids, twists, and locs, not only protect the hair from damage but also prevent stress on the skin around the hairline. Healthy hair practices contribute to an overall youthful appearance.
  3. Stress Management: Cultural practices often emphasize community, spirituality, and mindfulness, which can help manage stress. Lower stress levels are associated with better skin health and a more youthful appearance.

While the phrase “Black don’t crack” is often used to celebrate the beauty and resilience of Black women, it is essential to acknowledge the various factors contributing to their ageless appearance. Genetics, skincare, lifestyle choices, and cultural practices all play vital roles. Embracing these elements not only helps maintain a youthful appearance but also promotes overall health and well-being.

As society continues to explore and understand the science behind aging, the timeless beauty of Black women remains a testament to the power of nature, tradition, and self-care. The celebration of this ageless beauty serves as an inspiration and a reminder that true beauty is multifaceted and deeply rooted in the intersection of heritage, lifestyle, and self-love.

sourced eyebrow serums and skincare products. In order to further her reach, In 2008, Ms.
Braxton founded Madame, Inc. Through this corporation, Ms. Braxton was able to propel her

Inducted into the prestigious Marquis Who’s Who of America.

Even though Ms. Braxton has become a household name for her inspiration and awesome recipes, her most honored role in life is being the mother of celebrity entertainers, Toni. Michael, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar
Braxton.

HH: Let me first say, you look good Ms. E and still working, and showing up? What is your
secret to looking good and staying healthy, especially with so many people dealing with
health issues?

Ms. E: I do not have a secret. I believe that God blesses the humble with salvation and keeps me healthy.
It’s not something I can take credit for—it is all God.

HH: Congratulations on all of the success with your cookbook Cooking w/ Ms. E, From
bestselling list to having your book in store at Georgia State University and other
universities, what was your most memorable experience being an author? What did you
learn?

Ms. E: My most memorable experience occurred at the Women’s Expo in Atlanta, GA. As I walked
through the event, a little girl, no more than eight years old, approached me with a big smile on
her face. She told me that I inspired her and that she aspired to be like me one day. Her words
touched me deeply, and I was moved by the thought that someone so young could look up to me
in such a profound way. In that moment, I realized the impact we can have on others, even when we are unaware of it. It taught me that no matter how young or small someone might be, they are always observing and
learning from the people around them. We may not always see the influence we have, but we are constantly encouraging and inspiring others, often without even knowing it. This experience has
stayed with me and reminds me of the responsibility we have to be positive role models, as we
never know who might be watching and drawing inspiration from our actions and words.

HH: You just launched a new fashion business called Ms. E’s Closet. First congratulations. Tell
us how this new venture got started. What can customers expect, types of clothing, sizes?

Ms. E.: One day, as I was going through my closet, I had a moment of realization. I noticed that I had so
many wonderful and lovely things that were just sitting there unused. I thought about how others
could benefit from these items, so I decided to take action. I began pulling out a variety of
fabulous things, including shoes, purses, hats, suits, and more. Some of these items had only
been worn once or twice, while others had never been worn at all. They ranged in all sizes and
styles, from elegant After 5 attires to versatile business casual outfits. As I sorted through these items, I imagined how much joy and use they could bring to others. The thought of someone else loving these pieces as much as I did fill me with a sense of purpose. This inspired me to create a way to share these treasures with those who could truly benefit from them. And so, Ms. E’s Closet was born. It has become a place where people can find beautiful
and high-quality clothing and accessories that suits their style preferences. This initiative not
only allowed me to declutter my space but also to make a positive impact on others by providing
them with items that could enhance their lives and bring them happiness.

We saw that you and your amazing daughters are coming back to TV, The Braxtons? You know it will not be the same without Traci, but what can we expect to see in this new show?

Ms. E: Nothing is ever the same, but we have to move forward. Yes, Traci is missed, but her spirit will
always be with us, around us, and in our thoughts. She would want us to keep moving; to become the best family we can be through prayer. Each day is different, but with God’s help, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). In the new show, you can expect the same dynamics you would see in any family. We will have disagreements, exchange words, and sometimes even unkind words. But you will also see love, laughter, and moments of embracing one another. We will continue to live life because that is what being a family is all about. Our show premieres exclusively on WE tv and streaming exclusively on ALLBLK this August 9, 2024.

HH: With so much going on in the world and news, what keeps Ms. E motivated, inspired, and
stress free. Women deal with so much, any tips you have to help us woman get to your age and remain beautiful like yourself, because your skin is glowing!

Ms. E: I am not truly stress-free. I face trials and tribulations like everyone else, but I know where my strength lies. It is not in wealth, words, deeds, having the right answers, politics, or bureaucracy. My strength comes from the power and love of God. As women, we need to learn to love ourselves and recognize that there is no one greater than us except God. It is essential to understand our worth and the unique strength we possess. By embracing the love and power of God, we can navigate through life’s challenges with resilience and grace. Let’s empower each other to stand strong, knowing that our true strength lies in our faith and in the divine love that guides us.

Do you have anything else you want us to know that you have coming up? How can our readers keep up with Ms. E? How can we support you?

Ms. E: Readers can support me through their prayers and encouragement. I am excited to announce that
my team and I are working on the second edition of “Cooking with Ms. E,” featuring new and exciting recipes that I believe you will love. Additionally, I have an upcoming cooking show with my daughter Tamar that will soon be launched on Cleo TV. You can also expect to see more of my cookware products available soon. But, to stay connected, you can visit my website at www.EvelynBraxton.com or follow me on all social media platforms at Evelyn Braxton.

To all the women out there, remember Ms. E told you:

“You are greater than you give yourself credit for. Know who you are and never forget that there is no one greater than you, except God. Love you much, Look at God”
